How to measure oil?

Sorry for more noob questions, but you guys are my only hope!

How do I check the gearbox oil level on a '75 Titan T500? I located the fill cap on the right side of the engine and read online there is a "viewing window" or something where you can see the level. I don't see anything like that.

Once you've decided how much oil you want to use (see the prior threads on that), it seems clear that there is no really effective way to know how much you have in the tranny other than to drain it out and then measure it as you refill. Immediately next to the right-side shift shaft is a threaded hole that is sort of a "level hole" but the concensus seems to be that the use of that hole is not an acurrate way of determining oil quantity. Anybody have any other thoughts?

Change the oil. Put in 1200 or 1400cc depending on model. Start the bike and run for 5 mins. Turn it off. Wait 5 mins for the oil to settle. Use a long screwdriver as a dip stick through the oil filler hole. Push the screw driver down into the oil filler tube an push in until the handle bottoms out. (make sure it is not too long and hits the bottom of the crank case). Pull it out and mark the oil level. I used a file to grind a line. Keep this handy or put it in the tool kit as it now a marked dip tick.

I have a 1400cc model. If you have the same one would you mind telling me the measurements of your homemade dip stick? Could save me an oil change.

It is 115mm from the top of the oil filler hole. So when you put the screw driver in it sits onto top of the oil filler hole. Use a thin driver with 115mm marked.

cut a cable tie and fix it to the plug, make sure it is the right length.
once you measured the oil before filling 1400cc.
put the plug back in and take out ,you will the see how far the oil is on the cable tie(at this point if the cable appears to long trim it), cut a little nick in it.
and there you have it your own dip stick!
this what I did to my last T500.

just fold the end over where it fitted into the plug.
never had problems with it coming out.
