Okay, found the starter and successfully removed and disassembled it.
Has anyone ever found new brushes to replace worn/non-existant ones? (hmmm, can't believe they were completely worn away with only 4000 miles on the bike. Just wondering if they were just old and brittle and broke up after sitting for 25 years. )
A quick search at my favorite suppliers and I find that they don't even bother to list part numbers for the brushes.
It is a Kokusan starter. everything else seems to be in good condition, I hate to have to buy a whole new starter.

One brush for the Kokusan starter motor is still available from Suzuki (depending on which country you live in) for the + side - part 31131-34020 and its about 3.20 in USD from American dealers. For the - side, part 31132-34020 is evidently not available from Suzuki but I think Reiner may have one. Just drop him an email at GTReiner1@aol.com. His price list shows it as being around 6 EURO. You may also want to ask him for a copy of his current GT550 parts lists.

Thanks for info. After a little more digging I did find the 1 brush for the neg. side but no positive brush. since the old ones were gone I have no reference as to what they look like. could the same brush be used for both positions?

correction, I found the + brush that you pointed out but no - side.

And you haven't heard back from Reiner ?

Yes, heard from him yesterday. 14 Euro for the brush including shipping. Kinda steep for a $3 part. gonna keep looking figure out what I want to do.

Well the one brush that was supposed to be available in the states was no longer in stock. I took the starter down to a starter/generator shop where I was promptly given a set of brushes that were for a similar model starter and were just a hair too wide. a few strokes with a flat file, a little solder, and that baby is rockin' and rollin' ! where there is a will there is a way !
