    GT550 carb problem

Posted by Matt Light on 5/26/2001, 9:58 pm

I recently split the cases on my GT550 and got it running again, but there is a major bog in the lower end of the gears, particularly in 1st gear from a dead stop. The bike runs well after it gains momentum but it seems like it had more power before. It was suggested that I might have a clog in one of the jets on the carbs, so I pulled the carbs today. The problem is that the starter valve on the left carb is frozen and no amount of liquid wrench seems to undo it. I don't think that I can remove the valve without doing damage to the carb. Does anyone know where I can get a new or used vm carb with a starter valve. The valve is brass or bronze. The carbs look good otherwise and I am going to clean them and tune them when I put them back on.
