550 triple / chrome or nikasil bores debate -- some evidence

Digging in my loft last night I found a May '76 issue of UK magazine, Motorcycle Sport. It has a test of a GT550M, in which it references the revised porting of the M model for more top end poke compared with the J/K/L, and it also says: "the cylinders are also finished with a new process."
Unfortunately, it doesn't say what that process is, but it seems pretty clear from the article that the M-spec models had revised cylinders compared with earlier models.
But why would they do it on the 550 and not on the others? As with many things, this clue leaves more questions than answers ....
