DKW: 1919- Germany - DKW virtually invented the two stroke engine as we know it today. The company perfected the design of expansion chamber exhaust systems, reed and disc inlet valves, and charge loop scavenging. DKW even perfected the unusual three-cylinder layout used to such great effect by Honda twenty years later. The company's development engineer and Grand Prix rider Ernst Degner defected from East Germany and took his expertise to Suzuki in the early 1960's.

DOUGLAS: 1907-56 UK -  unique engine layout gave the Douglas good handling for their day, but the company persevered with some distinctly unfashionable features, such as the hand-operated gear-shift. A very good Speedway machine in its time. Mass produced as a despatch riders bike in World War 1. In later years the company concentrated on manufacturing Vespas, one of the most popular of all scooters.
