First views of Gallipoli - Quinn's Post, The Nek, Walker's Top, Chunuk Bair etc
The first moment you view the ANZAC battlefield at Gallipoli you cannot help thinking of the desperate struggle that went on here over 8 months. The striking thing is the small scale of the situation. The immediate lesson is that the campaign was hopeless and doomed from the beginning. Clinging to the seaward side of the First Ridge the ANZACs were given an impossible task when resisted by a resolute enemy. The quick reaction of the Turks and in particular Kemal Ataturk (as he came to be known) prevented the ANZACs gaining anything more than a tenuous foothold.
