More Information?

Below is a more comprehensive overview of the products to get your juices flowing…

Mototronic's new Electronic Ignition products, the Mototronic GT and Mototronic R incorporate a base feature-set of M-Technologies, and require no professional assistance to install on your motorcycle due to a maximum level of customisation to your particular engine specification, and it can easily handle those engines with rephased cranks.

Features of the M-technologies on the Mototronic GT and R, include:

  • Active Coil Control
  • Cylinder Firing Management
  • SmartStart technology
  • PC Programmability (only available on the Mototronic R)
  • Immobiliser

Diagnostic Engine Sensing

Mototronic uses a sophisticated engine sensor that allows the ignition unit to monitor the exact crank position at all times. This has a huge advantage when it comes to setting up the Mototronic unit for the first time.

Ease of Installation and Set-up

When installing your Mototronic ignition unit for the first time:

1.      Turn the crank over by hand and measure TDC of each cylinder on the compression stroke.

2.      When TDC is reached, a button is pressed on our unit and the unit then "learns" the angular position of compression TDC for each cylinder.

3.      We do not rely on a mechanical "plate" that has been modified to 270 degrees or 277 degrees (applicable mainly for the Yamaha XS 650), as this is generally fixed and requires the crank angles to be precisely 270 or 277.

Voltage optimisation

We have an on-board DC-DC converter which allows the unit to charge the coils. Thus the coils are not dependent on battery voltage for current saturation.

Active Coil Control

Active Coil Control functionality provides coil learning and monitoring meaning that the Mototronic unit will work with any coil on the market, regardless of whether it is a high performance after-market coil, or OEM.  It also optimises spark energy to the coils, and monitors their condition.

The unit automatically checks the coils for their characteristics each time it is switched on, and alters the coil on time accordingly. Hence the unit is able both to protect itself against being fried if a set of coils with very low primary resistance are installed, but also it maximises the coil energy for what ever coils are used.

The Mototronic unit does not require installation of a dual output coil like some units (namely Boyer). To replace independent coils with a single dual output coil is silly to us as the single coil has to fire twice as often as two coils, and at higher revs never gets a chance to fully saturate.

The real strength of the Mototronic unit is the ability to work with a coil of say only 0.5 ohms as this is the primary resistance of a high performance coil. Even the Dyna 2000 can only work with coils down to 2.3 ohms, any lower and you burn out the unit. Our ignition unit will work with any coils, and not be in any danger of "frying".

In fact the lower the primary resistance, the better out unit likes it.

Cylinder Firing Management

Mototronic Cylinder Firing Management functionality means that the coils are fired individually as and when required by your engine, rather the alternative technique of firing all coils at the same time.  Individual cylinder timing can be adjusted via the controls on the unit to take into account slight variations in the crank angles.

Cold Starting and Kick Starting advantages of Mototronic

Mototronic SmartStart technology incorporates Cold Temperature MultiSparking and KickStart Advance Delay.

Two measures for easier kick starting built into the Mototronic range include the ability of the unit to be fully operational and deliver maximum spark energy when there is only 4 volts from the battery, when it should produce 12 volts (thanks again to the DC-DC converter), and therefore you are guaranteed to avoid any ‘weak spark’.

Also, the unit automatically sets the ignition advance to TDC at kick starting speed, thus minimising the chance for kick back. Therefore, when the bike is first kicked over in the morning, the timing defaults to TDC (Top Dead Centre), minimising the risk of kick-back that can potentially harm the rider.

It also means the timing for starting is always consistent. Finally our smart triggering unit will know when the unit is switched on exactly what position the engine is in thus it knows exactly what cylinder needs to be fired at what time from the moment the bike is first kicked over.

Performance Ignition management – PC Programmability

A fully user-programmable unit, the Mototronic R, will be available for those who wish to go beyond this base feature-set into full Ignition Management for racing or other purposes, to provide you with full control over advance curves and rev limits through PC programmability.

Finally for our programmable unit, the software is free and is installed on a PC and gives a graphical interface allowing you to set your own 2-D
advance curves.

We are aiming to allow 3-D advances curves at a later date.

The programmable unit itself has space for three different advance curves that are downloaded when convenient along with the factory default curve. This allows you the option of running three separate curves and swapping between then in real time (with the engine running) to allow yourself to choose which one is best for each track you race on.

Thus you can spend your nights playing with the software working out what you think is the best curve (or curves) and then test it in practice at the track!

If you want to change it at the track, then load the software onto a laptop and take this to the track. Then you can make changes on the run as required.

Please note that our unit trigger is mounted off the cam just like the points.

And the units also come with a Key-fob Immobiliser with rolling code for added security.
